A big proposal has come forward regarding immigration in America. Amidst the strict immigration policy of the Trump administration, senior Democratic Party senator Alex Padilla has introduced a new bill. The purpose of this bill is to give millions of people living in America for a long time the opportunity to get permanent residence i.e. green card. This can also provide great relief to Indian professionals, especially those who are working in America on H-1B visa and have been waiting for a green card for years.
California Senator Alex Padilla has re-introduced a bill titled Renewing Immigration Provisions of the Immigration Act of 1929. Under this proposal, such people have the right to permanent residence and have been living in America continuously for at least seven years. For this, it will be necessary that they do not have any criminal record and they fulfill all other legal conditions related to green card.

When was the provision last updated?
This bill is an attempt to change the old registry provision of America. This provision was last updated in 1986. According to the current rules, only those people can avail this facility, who were living in America before January 1, 1972. Because of this, this rule has become almost irrelevant and very few people are able to take advantage of it. Senator Padilla said that he has introduced this bill in support of those hardworking immigrants who have been living in America for many years and contributing to the economy and society there.
He alleged that due to the policies of the Trump administration, millions of families are living in constant fear and uncertainty. He says that now the time has come for America to modernize its immigration laws and give people living for a long time the opportunity of legal permanent residence.
Many groups of people can get benefits
Many groups of people can get the benefit of this bill. These include Dreamers, people with Temporary Protected Status, workers in essential services, children of long-term visa holders and highly skilled professionals. Indian professionals working on H-1B visa also fall in this category. Indian professionals have to wait the longest for employment-based green cards. The reason for this is America’s per country border policy, due to which a huge backlog of applications coming from India has been created. Many Indian professionals have to wait years and in some cases decades for a green card.
