An earthquake of 7.1 magnitude was felt in Japan on Tuesday (28 July 2026). According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), an earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale was recorded in Kumamoto Prefecture. Immediately after the earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning. The agency said that there is a possibility of waves of about 1 meter (about 3.28 feet) high in the sea. Due to this, people living in coastal areas have been advised to remain alert and go to safe places.
After the earthquake, the Japanese government also took immediate action and issued an emergency earthquake warning. This warning has been issued for several provinces of southern Kyushu island of Japan. An emergency alert has been issued by the government for Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita and Miyazaki provinces. The administration is continuously monitoring the situation and people have been appealed to follow the official instructions.

At present, no official information has been revealed about the damage caused by the earthquake or any casualty. Relief and rescue agencies have been alerted and the situation in the affected areas is being assessed. Japan is one of the most earthquake affected countries in the world. The country is located in the Ring of Fire region of the Pacific Ocean, where earthquakes and volcanic activities occur frequently. For this reason, a strong disaster management system has been developed in Japan to deal with earthquakes.

A magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck the northeast coast of Japan on March 11, 2011, the most powerful recorded earthquake in Japan’s history. The huge tsunami that followed also affected the Fukushima nuclear plant. Nearly thousands of people died in this disaster.
