During the open debate in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), India has strongly condemned the attack on ships carrying Indian sailors in the Strait of Hormuz. India’s permanent representative to the United Nations P. Harish has expressed concern over these attacks. He told the Security Council that 1 Indian citizen was killed in these attacks while 1 is missing. Apart from this, many Indians have also been injured.
India’s permanent representative at the meeting convened by the Democratic Republic of Congo, Harish, said, “We strongly condemn the recent attacks on several ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz this month, including the ships GFS Galaxy, MT Al Bahia and MT Mombasa.”
P. Harish further said that India has condemned the violence targeting seafarers and hindering free and safe movement on international waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz. India strongly supports dialogue and diplomacy for peace, security and stability in the region.
What did India demand?
India has demanded from the Security Council that targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in this area should be stopped. Along with this, according to international law, free and unhindered movement and trade on the international waterways of this region should be restored as soon as possible.
Describing the Middle East as very important for India, he has demanded security and stability in the region. He said that about 1 crore Indians live and work in the Gulf region. Their safety and well-being is the biggest priority for India. India’s trade and energy supply networks are tightly linked to the region.
How important is the Middle East for India?
The Indian representative said that India’s annual bilateral trade from the Gulf region is about 180 billion dollars, foreign direct investment is more than 31 billion and India receives remittances of 52 billion US dollars from the GCC.
