Donald Trump News: US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order for truck drivers to gain efficiency in English for truck drivers in the country, about which Sikh rights groups have expressed concern. These groups have said that this order may have a “discriminatory effect” on the truck drivers of the Sikh community and unnecessary obstacles in employment.
What is said in the order issued?
The executive order titled ‘Implementing the general rules of the road for US truck drivers stated that the US truck drivers are essential for the strengthening of the country’s economy, its safety and livelihood of American people.
The order issued on Monday said, “There should be security related requirement for professional drivers in English. They should be able to read and understand traffic signals, they should come to communicate with the officials of traffic safety, border patrol, agricultural posts and goods weight-limit station.
Trump declares English as the national language of America
Trump has declared English as the official national language of America. The ‘Sikh Coalition’ organization said that it is in “quite worry” with this order of Trump. He said, “We understand that under this order, Transport Minister Scene Dafi will be instructed to take” steps “for the purpose of strengthening the inspection processes to comply in English.
The ‘Sikh Coalition’ group said that this executive order creates serious concern for the Sikh community which has a strong presence in the US truck operating industry. It cited the report of ‘The Economist’ that said that about 1,50,000 Sikhs work in the country’s truck operating industry, of which 90 percent are drivers.
The group said, “We are worried that this order can have a discriminatory effect on the Sikh truck drivers and unnecessary obstacles may arise in getting employment for qualified persons.”
