Questions are often raised about the work pressure and mental pressure of people working in the private sector. Now a similar question has started arising on the death of young engineer Nikhil Somvanshi, who works in Ola’s AI company Krutrim. Actually, Nikhil’s corpse was found in Agra lake of Bengaluru on 8 May. Since then, there are many discussions about this case on social media.
Suicide due to work pressure
The matter came into the limelight when a colleague of Krutrim claimed Reddit that Nikhil committed suicide due to “work pressure”. On Reddit, a user named ‘Kirigawakazuto’ claimed that he worked with Nikhil in Krutrim. According to him, after two people left the company, the entire work was put on Nikhil. He also wrote that working with the manager, especially for freshers, is “trumatic”, that is, mentally heavy.
Who was Nikhil Somvanshi?
Nikhil was working as a machine learning engineer in Krutrim (Ola’s Artificial Intelligence Unit). He graduated from IISC Bengaluru in July 2024 and was associated with Krutrim in August 2024. According to Linkedin profile, he did an internship in Kotak Mahindra Bank and IISC. His work in IISc was on Natural Language Processing (NLP) and LLM based chatbot ‘Saathi’, which was funded by Melinda Gates Foundation.
What did Krutrim say?
A Krutrim spokesperson told PTI on May 18 that we are in deep mourning due to the tragic demise of Nikhil Somvanshi. We are giving full support to his family and colleagues. The company also made it clear that Nikhil was on personal leave at the time of the incident. He had expressed the need for rest by messaging his manager on 8 April and he was discharged. On 17 April, Nikhil again told that he is feeling better, but if he wants to rest, then his holiday was further increased.
Debate is going on on social media
While the company is saying that it gave full support to Nikhil, the colleague claiming reddit is talking about ‘work pressure and toxic management’. This contradiction has given rise to a debate on social media whether the work culture of the tech industry in India is becoming unbearable for freshers?
