The Supreme Court has reprimanded the Uttar Pradesh Police in a case of rape and conversion. Chief Justice (CJI) Sanjeev Khanna said that the matter was arbitrarily settled by imposing forcefully putting the conversion act. This attitude of the police was biased. CJI Sanjeev Khanna was hearing the petition of a man, who has been in jail for 8 months and filed an application for bail.

According to the report of Live Law, the petitioner argued in the court that he has been in jail for the last eight months and has been sent here not for any mistake but only to help a woman. The petitioner has been booked under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Anloful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021.

In the previous Sanuwai, the petitioner told the court that he was in a relationship with the woman with the consent of the woman and both had known each other for a long time. The complainant also a child from his first marriage, but due to wrong allegations, the petitioner was sent to jail.

Hearing on Thursday (March 20, 2025), CJI Sanjeev Khanna said, ‘I am surprised, I do not want to use the words, but the state police has taken a biased attitude … How can you do this? Facts themselves speak themselves and you are forcibly putting the Conversion Act. The court said that keeping in mind the facts and circumstances, the petitioner is granted bail and needs to take care that he also has a child.

After delivering the verdict, CJI Sanjeev Khanna said, ‘There is nothing in this case. The UP police has not taken the right attitude in this matter. The facts themselves are telling all themselves and you have imposed conversion law in it, which was not needed. Now the court will listen to this matter on 5 May. The court has also given the police two weeks to file a reply. The UP Police counsel had sought additional time demanding the filing of a counter affidavit as the gang rape has also been charged in this case.
