Everyone knows the world’s highest peak Mount Everest today, but very few people know what its real name was, who discovered it and why it was named “Everest”. This peak was discovered by the British in the 19th century, when the work of measuring the height of the land under the name “Great Trigonometric Survey” was going on in India. At that time, the British named this peak as “Peak XV”, because it came out as a high peak without name.
This person calculated the height of Everest in 1852
In the year 1852, Radhanath Sikdar, a promising Indian mathematician of the survey team, told for the first time that this peak is the highest peak in the world. This news shocked the British officials, because earlier Kanchenjunga was considered the highest. After this, Surveyor General of British India, Andrew Waugh, recommended the name of this peak after his former officer Sir George Everest.
How was the name kept
The interesting thing is that Sir George Everest himself did not want this peak to be named after him. He believed that the name that is in the local language should be adopted. But despite this, in the year 1865, the Royal Geographical Society officially named it Mount Everest. Even today in Nepal it is called Sagarmatha, which means “peak of the sky”, while in Tibet it is named Chomolungma, which means “mother of the world”. But the name “Everest” given by the British is the most recognized in the whole world.
Why Mount Everest is special
Mount Everest is not just a mountain, but it is the highest peak of the earth. Its height is 8,848.86 meters, ie about 29,031 feet. It is situated on the border of Nepal and China (Tibet). In Nepal it is called Sagarmatha, the height of Mount Everest makes it special for the world, because there is nothing on the elevated earth.
This peak is the dream of climbers around the world. Thousands of people try to conquer it every year, but this journey is not easy. Climbing Everest can also be fatal, because there is very low oxygen, temperature lives in minus, icy storms go and can kill the cracks of snow.
