Bangladesh general elections: After the coup of Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh, there has been a relief news for the people waiting for the election. Bangladesh interim leader Mohammad Yunus announced on Friday (June 06, 2025) that elections will be held in the country in early April 2026.
Addressing the country, 84 -year -old Nobel Peace Prize winner Yunus said, “I am announcing the citizens of the country that the elections will be held any day in the first fortnight of April 2026.” Yunus made this announcement during a address to the country on TV on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.
What did Mohammad Yunus say?
Yunus said, “After reviewing the ongoing reforms related to justice, governance and electoral process, I am announcing the country today that the next national election will be held any day in the first fortnight of April 2026.” He said that the Election Commission will soon present a detailed election roadmap. According to the Government Bangladesh Sangabad Sanstha (BSS), Younus reiterated that the government had earlier indicated that elections would be held between December 2025 and June 2026.
‘Emphasis on holding fair and transparent elections’
He said, “We are taking all the necessary measures to ensure that the country should be ready to hold independent and reliable elections during this period. A political party turned into fascist rule through repeated manipulation in elections. People who organized those showy elections, called them criminals. The governments that emerged from them finally rejected them.”
He stressed that the primary responsibility of the government is to ensure that the upcoming elections are clean, festive, peaceful and widely participated, so that the country does not get stuck in another cycle of crisis. He said, “Institutional reform is important. If we fail to ensure good governance in institutions associated with electoral process, then all the sacrifices made by our students and citizens will become useless.”
‘Maximum participation should be done’
Yunus, giving importance to maximum participation, said, “We want the largest number of voters, candidates and parties in this election. It should be remembered as the most fair election in the history of Bangladesh. After one and a half century, after more than one and a half century, a real representative Parliament will be formed and millions of youth will vote for the first time.”
Yunus further said about the election to be held, “This is not just one vote but it is a chance to create a new Bangladesh. Many familiar parties and their election marks will appear on the ballot, it is up to the people to choose candidates who are really committed to your expectations and your future.”
