Chronic cough: Constant cough can sometimes cause embarrassment, especially when people around you start thinking that you have Kovid-19. Frequent coughing makes the body tired, sleep is not complete and sometimes there can be problems related to urination. As a doctor, I have also seen such patients whose ribs broke due to repeated coughing.

In such a situation, the question arises that why does some people have so long cough? In this article, an attempt has been made to explain some common causes of cough, as well as when you should investigate a doctor in fear of a serious illness.

Why do we cough?

Cough is a natural safety system of the body, which helps protect the lungs from dust, germs and harmful things. This process makes the air out loudly so that the airways can remain clean. Chronic lung diseases such as chronic bronchitis or bronchiectasis have high cough as lung cleaning sealia does not function properly. There are two types of cough – wet cough, in which mucus comes out, and dry cough, which is due to more sensitivity of the throat or airway without mucus.

The reason for prolonged cough:

If an adult persists for more than 8 weeks or a child has a cough for more than 4 weeks, then it is considered a long -term or chronic cough. There are three common reasons for this:

  • Smear
  • Asthma
  • Stomach acid (acid reflux)

Sometimes these problems are also done simultaneously. Some people also have conditions such as “cough asthma” or “isenophilic bronchitis”, which cause swelling in the lungs, but they do not heal quickly with common asthma drugs.

Cough can remain even after infection

Cough can persist for several weeks even after curing viral or bacterial infections like colds or colds. This is because the airways become swollen after the infection and become more sensitive, which causes mild irritation to start cough. The mucus also becomes more viscous, which is difficult for lung sealia. Also, allergies that produce allergies can also add cough to the weak layer of the throat. It may take time to recover.

Is this a sign of a new disease?

When cough persists for a long time, people often fear that there is no new bacterial (bacterial) infection after viral infection, for which antibiotic medicine is needed. But it cannot be guessed only with yellow or green phlegm.

Doctors perfectly examine your symptoms to detect a serious infection – such as difficulty in breathing, high fever or a strange sound in the lungs. Apart from this, it is also seen that you do not have asthma or any allergy, which is not known earlier.

What is treatment?

If someone has a persistent cough but is fine in the rest of the cases, then antibiotics are usually not necessary because cough is often irritated and not infection. Simple remedies like saline spray, steam, throat spray and honey are beneficial to reduce cough. Cough medicines do not benefit much and they can also have side effects. Sometimes cough can also be a sign of serious illness, such as lung cancer-although it is very low. Therefore, if the cough persists for a long time, the chest X-ray and lungs should be tested.

When should a doctor be seen?

  • If you have any of these symptoms with your cough, a doctor should be consulted immediately.
  • Cough with cough
  • Be very phlegm
  • Breathing difficulty, especially while resting or at night
  • Havoc
  • Lose weight
  • Repeated pneumonia
  • Smokers over 45 years of age

If the reason is not known?

Sometimes it happens that cough is not cured despite complete investigation and treatment. Such condition is called refractor chronic cough, that is, the old cough that remains despite treatment.

When no specific reason for cough is known, it is called unclear chronic cough. Earlier such cough was considered to be caused by mental stress or habit, but now medical science takes it seriously and this perception has changed.
