CJI Gawai, in his address on the subject of ‘Quicking the promise of the Constitution from delegation to implementation at this historic institution located at Oxford University, referred to his journey from a municipal school to the highest judicial post of the country.
‘Millions of citizens of India were called untouchables’
He said that till many decades ago millions of citizens of India were called untouchables. They were told that they are impure. They were told that they cannot speak for themselves, but today we are here, where a person belonging to the same people is sitting in the judiciary of the country and is speaking openly. This has been done by the Constitution of India.
‘There is a silent revolution carved by the constitution ink’
He said that the Constitution tells the citizens that they can speak for themselves. They have a similar place in every sphere of society and power. The constitution is not just a legal charter or political structure. It is a feeling, lifeline, a silent revolution carved by ink.
Justice Gawai said that the Constitution is a social document, which does not remove its eyes from the cruel truths of caste, poverty, boycott and injustice. This does not pretend that all are equal in the country with deep inequality. Instead, it dare to intervene, re -write the screenplay, re -balance power and restore dignity.
