When should Chaturmas start in 2025?
Chaturmas means four months (Shravan, Bhadrapada, Ashwin, Karthik). This year, Chaturmas will start from July 6 and will remain till 1 November 2025.
Why do Vishnu rest for 4 months in Chaturmas?
According to the legend, King Bali took his authority over the three worlds. The nervous Indradev and all other gods sought help from Lord Vishnu, Shri Hari took Vamana avatar. It is said that King Bali was very mighty and donor. Lord Vishnu came to Vamana avatar to ask him for alms. He sought donations of three steps of land from King Bali. King Bali pledged to donate. Then Vamana took a huge form and measured the earth in one step, in the second step.
When there was no place for the third step, King Bali bowed his head in front of God. God placed the third step on the head of King Bali and ordered him to live in the Patal Lok. Pleased with the devotion and charity of Raja Bali, Lord Vishnu asked him to ask for a boon. King Bali sought a boon from God that “he wants to live in Hades with him” Shri Hari accepted the word of King Bali.
Due to this, all the deities and Goddess Lakshmi got worried. Goddess Lakshmi reached King Bali by becoming a woman to free Lord Vishnu from the Hades. He tied a rakhi, considering King Bali as his brother and in return asked for the promise to free Lord Vishnu from Hades.
Lord Vishnu did not want to disappoint his devotee, so he gave a boon to Bali that he would live in Patal Lok from Ashada Shukla Ekadashi to Kartik Shukla Ekadashi, so Lord Vishnu lives in Yoganidra in these four months.
