What is a brigadier?
Brigadier, the Indian Army has a one-star rank, which is above the colonel and below the Major General. This post is very responsible, as Brigadier commands a brigade (usually a unit with 3000 to 5000 soldiers). This rank falls under the category of gazetted officer.
How to become brigadier?
To become a brigadier, first you have to be admitted as an officer in the Indian Army.
- National Defense Academy (NDA) – This is the most popular option after 12th. After passing from here, the cadet gets the rank of lieutenant after training.
- Joint Defense Services Examination (CDS) – After graduation, officer training can be taken by going to institutions like Indian Military Academy (IMA), Officers Training Academy (OTA) through CDS.
- Technical Entry Scheme (TES)/ Engineering Course – There is a chance to become an officer in the army for technical graduates. Once you become a lieutenant, the officer’s promotion is on the basis of experience, service records and qualification fixed by the board.
To become a brigadier, the selection board reviews the officer’s leadership capacity, training, experience and performance.

Pay Level: 13A
Basic pay: 1,39,600 – 2,17,600 per month
Other allowances: HRA, DA, Kit Allowance, Military Service Pay, Allowance, Travel Allowance etc.
