What is dopamine: Have you ever felt that while scrolling the phone, you can’t stop yourself from watching the next fun video or post? Or have you ever felt excited when you achieve your goal, or at delicious food or fill your online shopping cart. Why do some experiences look so satisfactory, while some others make us feel sad? Well, dopamine may be responsible for this. Here is told what it does in our brain and body.
What is dopamine?
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, a chemical messenger that facilitates communication between the brain and the central nervous system. It sends messages between different parts of your nervous system, which helps your body and brain to coordinate everything from your actions to your mood.
Dopamine is most known for its role in short -term bliss, and this makes us feel like things like having delicious food, drinking alcohol, scrolling social media or falling in love.
Dopamine also helps in learning, maintaining attention and concentration, and helps us to store memories. It also plays a role in kidney work by controlling the salt and water levels emitted by us. In contrast, low levels of dopamine have been linked to Parkinson’s disease such as memory disorders. How Dopamine inspires us to look for pleasure.
Dopamine motivates to look for joy
Dopamine is not active only when we do enjoyable things. It is already active and inspires us to look for pleasure. Suppose I go to a cafe and decide to buy a donut. When I eat Donut, it tastes fantastic. Dopamine increases and I feel happy.
The next time I pass by the cafe, dopamine is already active. This last time eaten donut and reminds how tasty it was. Dopamine inspires me to go to the cafe again, buy another donut and eat it. From the evolutionary point of view, dopamine was incredibly important and ensured the existence of species.
This inspired behaviors like hunting and food. This strengthened to seek shelter and security and stay away from predators. And it inspired the companions to find and breed.
Modern technology increased the effects of dopamine
However, modern technology has increased the effects of dopamine, leading to negative results. Activities like excessive use of social media, gambling, alcohol, use of drugs, sex, pornography and gaming can stimulate dopamine leakage, which can cause a cycle of addiction and binding behavior.
Our dopamine levels can vary. Our brain continues to release some amount of dopamine at the ‘baseline’ rate. This is because dopamine is important for the functioning of our brain and body, whether there is pleasure or not.
Everyone’s baseline is different, which is affected by genetic factors like our DRD 2 dopamine receptor genes. Some people produce dopamine and metabolism faster than other people. Our baseline levels can also be affected by sleep, nutrition and stress in our lives. Since all of us have a baseline of dopamine, at any time the experience of our bliss is relative to our baseline rate and what has happened earlier.
When is Dopamine released?
If I play games on my phone in the morning and release dopamine from it, then I eat something delicious with morning tea, then I can’t experience the level of satisfaction or joy that I would not play for those games.
The brain works hard to control itself and it will not allow us to continuously remain in the position of ‘high’ dopamine. This means that we can develop tolerance towards some exciting activities if we want them too much, because the brain wants to avoid living in a state of ‘high’ dopamine. Thankfully, there are healthy and without drug addiction ways to increase your dopamine levels.
Exercise is one of the most effective ways to increase dopamine naturally. Physical activities such as walking, running, cycling or even dance can trigger dopamine secretion, which can improve mood and give good motivation.
Brain leaves more dopamine- research
Research has shown that by listening to the music you like, your brain leaves more dopamine, which gives you a pleasant experience. And yes, spending time with people whose accompaniment we like is another great way to activate dopamine. Including these habits into daily life can help in the natural dopamine production of your brain and can help you enjoy inspiration, mood and permanent improvement in overall health.
