Canadian PM Mark Carney Attack on Trump: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Wednesday (March 26) reacted strongly to US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose 25% import duty on foreign cars. Carney called it an attack on the workers of his country and committed to protect Canadian companies and workers. Carney said, “We will protect our workers and companies and face it together.” He has made this controversy a major issue of his campaign in the upcoming April 28 election.

Prime Minister Carney said that this decision of Trump will harm the Canadian economy, but Canada will answer it through the tariff to be imposed on its behalf. He informed that a meeting of Canadian officials has been called, where “business options” will be discussed. Carney also said that the money received from these tariffs will be used to support Canadian workers.

Trump’s import duty and its impact
Donald Trump recently announced that 25% import duty would be imposed on all cars and light trucks not made in the US. This decision will be effective from April 2, and this fee will not apply to vehicles manufactured in the US. About 50 percent of cars sold in the American automotive market are manufactured in the US, while the rest is produced in countries such as Mexico and Canada.

The US supply chain under NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) with Mexico and Canada is highly integrated, making the import of vehicles of these countries play an important role in the US market. However, Trump had earlier imposed tariffs on these countries, but the auto industry was given temporary relief.

Windser-Detroot connection and workers support
Prime Minister Carney made this statement after a meeting with autoworkers and labor leaders in Windsor, Canada. Referring to Canada’s vertical tariff, he said that the money received from them will be used to protect the jobs of Canadian workers. Windsor’s ambassador Bridge, which connects Canada to Detroit, is a major center of the American auto industry. “This attack is part of the process of weakening strong commercial relations and partnership between Canada and the US,” Carney said.

Growing trading tension between Canada-America
Due to the increasing trading tension between Canada and the US, it is clear that the new era of tariffs will have a widespread impact on workers and industries. Canada is taking necessary steps to protect its workers and companies, while the American auto market will be seen.
