Eagle syndrome is a disease in which there can be severe pain in the throat, ears, jaw and head. This occurs when a bone near the throat increases excessively or a muscle connecting a muscle becomes hard. This condition mostly affects people between the ages of 30 to 50 years and is seen more in women. The disease was named after Dr. Waterl Eagle. Who identified it for the first time in 1937.
Why is Eagle syndrome?
The biggest reason for this disease is the styroid process to become excessively longer. Apart from this, there can be some other reasons.
- Head or neck
- Tonsil’s change after surgery
- Bone growth
- Arthritis or other bone related diseases
Eagle syndrome symptoms
Symptoms of eagle syndrome depend on individual, but this disease can have many symptoms.
- Sore throat and persistent pain
- Ear pain and heaviness
- Dinner
- Sore pain
- Headache and dizziness
- Jaw and face strange feeling
Many times this disease is considered similar to other diseases like migraine or jaw problems. Doctors recommend getting an X-ray or CT scan for the correct investigation.
Treatment of eagle syndrome
Different methods are adopted to treat eagle syndrome:
Medicines – Medicines are given to reduce pain and reduce inflammation.
Physiotherapy – Some exercises are done to strengthen the neck and jaw muscles.
Injection therapy- Steroid and local anesthetic injection provides relief in pain for some time.
Surgery- If the rest of the treatment does not get relief, the doctors do surgery to shorten the long bone.
Eagle syndrome happens to very few people, but if it is not treated on time, then this problem may increase. If there is persistent pain in the throat, ear or head, it is necessary to consult a doctor. This disease can be relieved by getting treatment at the right time.
