In December 2024, the situation started deteriorating due to Azerbaijani aircraft being killed in Russia. Russia accidentally targeted an Azerbaijani citizen aircraft as Ukrainian drone, in which 38 people died. After this, Russia called it an unfortunate mistake, but Azerbaijan considered it a serious military negligence. The death of citizens provoked both the public and the government. This accident caused a boil against Russian influence within Azerbaijan.
Police action in Yakaterinburg further increased tension
After this, another incident made the situation explosive. The Russian police raided Yakaterinburgh over suspicious death of two Azerbaijani brothers. On reaching Azerbaijan of the bodies, the post -mortem found that police custody had died due to harassment. Azerbaijan called it a violation of human rights. With this, the visit of Russian Deputy Prime Minister was canceled and all cultural programs were postponed.
Azerbaijan’s aggression
Azerbaijan then took action against many Russian citizens and media institutions. Under this, the office of Sputnik at Azerbaijan was raided and the editor was arrested. Warnings were given to close Russian schools and Russian citizens were also accused of drugs and espionage.
Turki role in Azerbaijan
Turki is the closest aide of Azerbaijan. Russia’s entire incident is emerging as a chief strategic player. Turki and Azerbaijan are planning to ignore Russia in the Jangzur Corridor deal. This corridor will connect Azerbaijan to the Nakhchavan Exclave out of the control of Russian FSB. According to reports, the Turki is also mediation in Armenia-Azerbaijan peace agreement. Turkas know that Russia is in a weak position due to Ukraine War and Western sanctions and it wants to change the regional balance by taking advantage of this.
