The BRICS summit is being organized in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. All 11 members of BRICS are participating in it, but the most discussion remains the focal point of India, Narendra Modi, because the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi now sets the agenda of BRICS and listens to India’s talk.
What was the situation of India in BRICS earlier?
There was a time when India was not taken very seriously in BRICS. When UPA 2 ruled between 2009 and 2013, questions were raised by all international media about India in BRICS. In some reports, India was told even the weakest link of BRICS. Some global policy makers even suggested it to Indonesia instead of India in BRICS.
Looking at the growth rate of BRICS member countries in 2013, India’s growth rate was just 5.5 percent, while China was 7.8%, Brazil 6.1%, Russia 6.5% and South Africa 5.7% in the growth rate of other member countries of BRICS. The situation was such that in 2013, India was called the 5 weakest economy in the world.
India’s growth rate was below other BRICS countries
At the same time, if we talk about the industrial growth rate of BRICS countries in the year 2013, then India was moving at the rate of just 2 percent. While China’s industrial growth rate was 9.3%, Brazil’s 8.4%, South Africa’s 7%industrial growth rate. As of 2013, inflation in India was also much higher than other member countries.
India’s role increased since 2014
When Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister of India in the year 2014, the outline of BRICS changed. In the BRICS, India’s perception was changed. Prime Minister Modi not only participated in every BRICS conference from the year 2014, but also set its agenda from India’s perspective, which all the members of the BRICS started accepting. It is now reported in the international media that India has become the main growth engine of BRICS.
India’s economy is moving very fast. In the year 2024-25, India’s GDP was 6.5 percent, while China was 5%, Russia’s 4.3%, Brazil’s 3.4%, South Africa’s 0.6%GDP. According to these data, India is far ahead in BRICS countries.
India’s industrial growth rate beyond China
At the same time, under the leadership of PM Modi, India has also defeated China in industrial growth rate. India’s industrial growth rate is 6.4%, while China stands at 5.8%. Russia is visible at 4.5%, Brazil 3.1%. India has become number one in this region in BRICS countries. In the year 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the growth of India’s economy is an example for many countries of BRICS.
By 2014, BRICS was usually seen from the perspective of financial support and multilateralism, but Prime Minister Modi changed its agenda. Many issues of India have started getting a place in the BRICS and other countries started accepting.
Talk on anti -terrorism issues
The biggest thing has been that anti -terrorism issues started being discussed in BRICS. In the year 2021, the BRICS Counter Terrorism Working Group was also formed, in which the counter terrorism action plan was accepted. The terrorist organizations could not misuse financial and digital networks, it was also discussed.
India also launched the Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in the BRICS, which emphasized the use of technology and India put their objectives in front of the BRICS countries, which are continuously getting a large -scale support.
India’s economy grows rapidly
Apart from this, in the BRICS, now the countries of Global South are talked about. Discussion in BRICS is also on space cooperation, green development, anti -corruption efforts. Earlier all these issues did not arise in the BRICS. Prime Minister Modi goes to Prime Minister Modi for bringing such issues in BRICS for discussion. The voice of the new India is heard in the BRICS and now India’s fast growing economy is proving to be a role model for BRICS countries.
