President Draupadi Murmu has nominated four people for the Rajya Sabha. These include prestigious government lawyers Ujjwal Devrao Nikam, Kerala social worker and educationist C Sadanand Masta, former Foreign Secretary Harshvardhan Shringla and historian and educationist Meenakshi Jain. These nominations have been made because those who were enrolled earlier were now retired and their seats were lying vacant. In such a situation, the question arises whether the President can raise anyone and nominate anyone, or there is any rule behind it. Let’s learn about this.

How nominated members are selected

Rajya Sabha has more than 250 members. Of these, 238 members come as representatives of different states and come as the current member number of 245, out of which 233 member states and union territories are representatives of Delhi, Puducherry and Jammu and Kashmir and 12 members are nominated by the President. Under Article 80 of the Constitution, members of the President Rajya Sabha can nominate. For this, the Prime Minister supports them and in a way those members are nominated only at their behest. Elections are not held for these members nor do they come from any political party. Yes, once he comes to Rajya Sabha, he can go to a party.

Which areas are held

The election of members nominated by the President is nominated in the Rajya Sabha as the best work in literature, science, art, sports, social service. These members get rights like the elected members. They take part in the action of the House, participate in the discussion and join the bill passing. They can vote in favor or opposition of the bill, but they cannot vote in the presidential election, but can vote to choose the Vice President. Like the rest of the MPs, they get allowance and accommodation, but they do not have to give information about their property, while the selected MPs have to be informed.
