X-rays: NASA has unveiled a mystery that was surprising astronomers for a long time. The mysterious X-ray rays found in space do not actually come from the place where it was thought before. With the help of NASA’s iXPE (Imaging X-Ray Polarimetry Explorer) telescope and other observatories, scientists have discovered that these sharp X-ray rays are produced from a shining accretion disk, but a rapidly moving winds of pulsar. This discovery challenges the established principles so far and makes it clear that the same powerful process is the cause of this radiation.

How did this discovery?

This discovery is based on a particular system PSR J1023+0038 (J1023) that is made of a rapidly rotated neutron star and a small star with him. This neutron star draws substance from its fellow star, making a rotating accretion disk around it. It also behaves like a pulsar that leaves the rays of acute radiation from its magnetic poles such as a lighted column.

The characteristic of J1023 is that it transforms from time to time into two stages one active state when it pulls the substance and the second calm state when it sends pulse in the form of radio waves. Such a pulsar is called “transacious millusal pulsar”.

Mystery revealed by polarization

Scientists analyzed polarization of both X-Ray and optical light to know this. Polarization shows how organized waves of light are. Ixpe is the only space telescope that can measure the polarization of X-ray in space. At the same time, VLT (Very Large Telescope) of Europe gave information about optical polarization. When the polarization angles met by both were found to be the same, scientists received a clear indication that all waves are originating from the same original source and that is the Pulsar Wind.

Challenge to old beliefs

Earlier it was believed that X-rays come out of the account disk but now it is clear that Pulsar Wind is its real root. It is a stormy mixture of wind gases, shaking, magnetic fields and almost light-moving particles that collide with the accretion disk and produce X-ray.

IXPE and future possibilities

According to Philip Karore, scientist at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, “IXPE has worked on different Pulsar before and has now proved that Pulsar Wind is the main energy source.” This new discovery is helping scientists to understand how the fierce activities around the neutron wires spread energy in the universe.

This study not only gives a new twist to the understanding of the development of wires, but it can also be helpful in highlighting more mysteries of the universe in the future. Missions like iXPE are now taking science to a level where we are able to see the depth of energy, magnetic fields and particles more clearly than ever. This discovery shows that even the dead stars have a wonderful ability to illuminate the universe and their energy is still surprising us.
