Tension and military clashes about the Preh Vihar temple between Thailand and Cambodia are in the headlines. This temple is situated on the top of a 525 meter high rock in the Dangrek hills on the border of both countries and both countries call it their own. But the question is, who is its real owner? Let’s know
History of Preh Vihar Temple
Talking about the Priya Vihier Temple, this temple was built by King Suryavarman I of Khmer Empire in the 11th century. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Shivling is still present in it. The Khmer Empire at that time spread to Cambodia and parts of Thailand, due to which both countries claim this temple. The temple is situated on the peak of the Dongrek hill on the border of Thailand and Cambodia, with 800 stairs and five beautiful gopuram (entrance). It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Reason for dispute
The temple is on the border of Surin and Sisakhet province of Thailand and Preh Vihar province of Cambodia. In 1907, France (who ruled Cambodia at that time) formed a map, showing the temple part of Cambodia. Thailand denied this map wrong and said that the temple is in their area.
Who is the owner of the temple?
The dispute continued even after Cambodia’s independence in 1953. In 1962, the International Court of Court (ICJ) ruled that Preh Vihar Temple is in the area of Cambodia. The court said that on the basis of the 1907 map, the temple falls in the area of Cambodia, and Thailand will have to remove its army. Although the temple was given to Cambodia, the two countries claim 4.6 square kilometers around it. The ownership of this land is not clear yet, due to which stress remains.
