These days there is a tremendous demand for A2 Ghee and A2 -labeled dairy products in Indian markets. Especially on online platforms it is being promoted as a superfood. Companies claim that A2 ghee is made up of indigenous cows, which is rich in A2 beta-seed protein. He says that this protein is easier to digest compared to A1 protein and reduces inflammation in the body.
Companies also say that A2 ghee has omega-3 fatty acids, conjugated linolic acid (CLA), vitamin A, D, E and K, which are beneficial for the heart, improve digestion, increase immunity and bring skin glow. Not only this, it is also said to be helpful in healing the wound. But are all these claims true?
What is the difference between A1 and A2 protein?
A major protein found in milk is beta-casin. There are two types of this:-
- A1 beta-casin, which is mainly found in the milk of European breed cows.
- A2 Beta-Casein, which is found naturally in the milk of Indian desi cows.
Companies claim that A2 milk or ghee is better for health. However, according to research by the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), there is no concrete scientific evidence about this claim. In some studies, A2 milk is said to be easy to digest, but such research has not been done on a large scale, which can prove that A2 ghee is actually more healthy than common ghee.
What do experts say?
Former MD of Amul and President of Indian Dairy Association R.S. Sodhi says, “I consider it only a spectacle of marketing. Today, well-known cooperatives and companies are selling good desi ghee to 600 to 1000 rupees, while the same ghee is being sold for 2000 to 3000 kg. Scientific evidence is not. “
He further says, “Ghee contains 99.5 percent fat. Protein is not even nominal. In such a situation, saying that my ghee has A2 protein and it is more beneficial, it is wrong. It is only a way to confuse people.”
Dr. Vibhuti Rastogi, Senior Dietician, Institute of Human Behavior and Allied Sciences, Delhi says that “A2 Ghee claims to be more healthy than mango ghee until it is scientifically proven, it cannot be considered true. Ghee cannot be considered a source of protein. Ghee is not a source of protein. If a company says that it gives you a2 protein and it is a protein.”
She also states that there is no special mention about A2 ghee in Ayurveda. They say that companies are taking advantage of saying that ghee has not been extracted from the machine or made in a traditional way, but they do not have a solid basis to prove it.
FSSAI warning
The Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) also refused companies to label the A1 and A2. FSSAI said that this labeling is misleading and violates the Food Safety Act, 2006. However, later this advisory was removed, but the question is still the same. A2 ghee is more healthy or is it just the reason for being expensive?
What is the reality?
Health experts believe that ghee is in any form, whether A1 or A2 is a source of fat. It gives energy to the body and is a source of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K). But eating high amounts of ghee can increase the risk of obesity, cholesterol and heart disease.
