Amid the decision to impose tariffs on India, US President Donald Trump made a statement in a press conference that we are talking to him right now. Let’s see what happens. India is the most tariff country in the world. We are currently interacting with India on this matter, where the rate ranges from 100% to 175%. However, the Government of India has clarified that it is committed to a fair, balanced and mutually profitable agreement with the US.
Trump not only lashed out at India’s tariff, but also described India’s energy partnership with Russia and the BRICS group membership as anti-America. He targeted India at joining the group, which aims to challenge the dollar power. BRICS is basically a group of anti-America countries and India is part of it. This is an attack on the dollar. This is not the first time Trump has criticized the traditional partners of America, but directly connecting India to the anti-America group is an extraordinary statement diplomatically.

Modi-tramp relationship
Trump described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a friend in the press conference, but also said that India buys very few goods from America. According to Trump, the business imbalance is so deep that America had to take action on it. Prime Minister Modi is my friend, but he does not do much in terms of business with us. Through this statement, Trump indicated that despite personal friendship, his administration would prioritize economic interests. This represents the US first policy of America.
India’s response
India has given a restrained reaction to this issue. The Government of India also clarified that it will take necessary steps to protect its farmers, small businesses and MSMEs from any loss. On the matter, the government had said that India and America have been talking on a fair, balanced and mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement for the last few months.
