The story begins with a 34-year-old woman, who was repeatedly having skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma. This cancer continued to return to his forehead, while the doctor continued to surgery and treat. Initially, the doctors felt that the woman’s skin was not able to repair properly with sunlight and the weak immune system is allowing the virus to grow.
Virus captured skin cells
The shocking truth came out in the investigation. Beta-HPV virus had entered the DNA of the woman’s skin cells and was making protein there, that is, the cells were completely captured. Earlier, scientists did not know that this virus could do so.
Weak immune system became a big problem
The woman’s immune system was also disturbed. His T-cells were not working properly, which led to the end of the power to stop the virus. As a result, the virus remained in the body for a long time and the cancer returned again and again.
Life from stem cell transplant
NIH’s team made a personalized treatment plan and gave the woman a stem cell transplant, which brought healthy cells to her poor immune cells. The result was miraculous. After the transplant, all the problems related to the woman’s HPV were over, even cancer. This cancer has not returned again for more than three years.
The method of treating cancer can change
This case shows that beta-HPV in people with weak immune systems can directly hijack skin cells and cause cancer. According to Dr. Andrea Lisco of Nih, “This discovery can completely change our understanding of how this cancer develops and how to treat it. Maybe there are many patients who are getting cancer due to the disturbances of the immune system and they can benefit from immune-targeted treatment.”
