The All India Institute of Medical Sciences of Delhi i.e. AIIMS (AIIMS) is the largest and famous hospital in the country. Thousands of people from every corner of the country arrive here for treatment daily. Whether the disease is small or big, there are long queues of patients in every department in AIIMS. Because of this, patients have to wait for months, but many times for some special surgery. Recently, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav gave some important information about this in Parliament.
These patients do not wait
He told that in two departments of AIIMS, one may have to wait for about 2 years for surgery. These departments are neurosurgery and cardio-thoracic-vascular surgery. However, serious patients are given priority, so that their lives are not threatened.
How much wait in which department?
The Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare said in a written reply that the wait for surgery in different departments of AIIMS New Delhi is different. In some departments, patients do not have to wait at all, while some may take a long time. For example, there is no waiting in departments like eye (eye), ENT (nose-ear-throat), pediatric disease, burn and plastic surgery, urology and dental surgery. In these departments, patients get immediate surgery facility. At the same time, general surgery may have to wait for about 2 months.
More trouble in these departments
If we talk about the Department of Gynecology and Cancer, then there is a waiting of about 3 months here. Gastro-Intestinal Surgery (Surgery related to the stomach and intestine) gives priority to serious cases, but in general cases it may take up to 3 to 6 months. The most wait is in neurosurgery and cardio-thoracic-vascular surgery. Surgery for serious and emergency cases is done immediately, but patients may have to wait for 2 years for normal or already fixed surgery.
How many patients in waiting?
The minister also informed that the number of patients waiting for surgery in some departments is very high. Let’s know about them.
- Cardio-Thoracic-Vascular Surgery: 690 patients
- Neurosurgery: 1324 patients
- Surgical oncology: 505 patients
- Coclear implant surgery: 28 patients
It is clear from these figures that there is the highest crowd in neurosurgery and cardio surgery, due to which the patients have to wait a lot.
Relief to serious patients
There is also some good news for patients suffering from serious diseases in AIIMS. According to the minister’s reply, patients do not have to wait more than a year in some such diseases. In these, patients suffering from heart disease are not given more than one year waiting. Patients with the last stage of kidney disease, who have donors are available, do not have to wait much. There is no waiting in liver related diseases, which can be treated by surgery. However, the availability of donor is necessary for liver transplant.
