US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed the executive order, which has been asked to impose 25 percent of additional tariffs on India. This order will be applicable after 21 days i.e. from 27 August. The order states that this action has been taken on India due to Russian oil purchases. Trump had earlier announced to impose 25 per cent of Toriffs on India on 30 July. Now India will now have a total of 50 percent tariff.
Trump’s order mentions Russia-Ukraine War
This move of America is expected to affect areas like textile, sea products and leather exports. According to Trump’s order, some imports and investments were banned on 8 March 2022 for attacking Ukraine on behalf of Russia. It clearly states that this tariff will be in addition to all other charges and tax.
In the order, Trump said, “I think the Government of India is currently importing oil from the Russian Federation directly or indirectly, so an additional duty rate of 25 percent will be applicable on Indian goods imported in the US customs area as per the law. The goods which have left before 27 August 2025 and will reach the US before 17 September 2025, will get exemption from tariff. “

Trump cited national security
According to the order issued by the White House, Trump cited the national security and foreign policy as well as trade laws to increase the tariff on India. It said that buying oil from Russia on behalf of India directly and indirectly pose a threat to America.
It has been clarified in the order that Russian oil ballot is not only oil exported from Russia, but any petrolium or oil product that is ready in Russia or has bought India through a third country and its source is Russia.
President Trump has also said in this order that if any other country is found to buy oil indirectly or directly from Russia, then similar tariffs or restrictions will be taken on it.
