The Ukraine government said on Tuesday (12 August 2025) that Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un over the phone. He gave information about the possible meeting with US President Donald Trump on the upcoming Alaska tour.
North Korea’s official news agency KCNA confirmed the conversation, but did not mention the trump-paint meeting. According to the KCN, the two leaders discussed the development of relations and strengthening cooperation in future under the Strategic Partnership Agreement held last year.
North Korea’s role in Ukraine War
According to a report by Reuters, Putin appreciated North Korea’s contribution in liberating the Cursa region of Western Russia in the war against Ukraine in a conversation with Kim Jong Wool. He praised the bravery, valor and self-sacrifice of the soldiers of the North Korean People’s Army. According to North Korean intelligence agencies, North Korea has deployed more than 10,000 soldiers in support of Russia and is preparing for another deployment. This revelation shows that the Russian-Ukraine war is now being fought not only between Russia and Western countries, but also through other allies.
Importance of strategic partnership
Last year, the strategic partnership agreement signed between Russia and North Korea is considered to be the beginning of a new era for both countries.
