Independence Day 2025: Describing sports as an important aspect in the journey to make India a developed country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday that the National Sports Policy (NSP) will ensure the development of sports from far -flung schools to Olympic level.

Prime Minister Modi said in his address to the nation from the Red Fort on the occasion of 79th Independence Day that at one time sports were not considered as a career option but today the situation is not like this.

He said, “Sports are an important aspect of development and I am happy that where the children were scolded by parents at one time, but today we have reached the situation where it has changed. If children now take interest in sports then parents are happy. ”

He said, “I consider it a good omen. I am proud to see that sports are being made in Indian families. This is good for the future of India. ”

The NSP was implemented on July 1 after the cabinet approval to determine accountability in sports administration and to promote healthy competition, fairness and moral conduct in the sports sector.

It proposes to constitute national agencies and inter-ministerial committees for quick action and effective solution to issues. The policy also proposes a renewed funding system, including initiatives like ‘An athlete adoption’, ‘a district adoption’, ‘a site adoption’, ‘a corporate-one game’ and ‘a public sector undertaking-one state’.

Prime Minister Modi said, “To promote sports, we have brought the National Sports Policy after many decades. This will ensure the development of sports from school to Olympic level. ”

He said, “We will prepare an ecosystem that is coaching, fitness or infrastructure.” We will make such an ecosystem to develop sports to far -flung corners of the country.

A few weeks after the arrival of NSP, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandavia also insisted and passed the National Sports Administration Bill pending for many years in Parliament. The bill ensures a strict regulatory framework and superficial dispute solution system for the National Sports Federations.

India has so far average performance in the Olympics and in the Tokyo Olympics 2021, seven medals including a gold are India’s best in this Mahasamar of the Games so far.

The Prime Minister also said that fitness is an important part of sports culture and reiterated that India has to fight obesity by reducing the use of oil in food.

He said, “When I talk about fitness, I also want to talk about obesity. This is a big problem in the country. It is estimated that every third person in future will be a victim of obesity. To win the war against obesity, we have to reduce the use of oil in food. ”
