Senior Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor has expressed concern over the arrest of former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickramasinghe. He has appealed to Colombo to renounce the politics of vengeance and treat his former President honorable.
On Sunday (August 24, 2025), the Congress MP posted on the social media platform X and said that I am worried about being detained in a minor allegations of former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickramasinghe. He has already been taken to the jail hospital due to his health problems.
Shashi Tharoor expressed concern
He said that I appeal to the government of Sri Lanka and in full respect that this is his internal matter, renounce the politics of revenge. Shashi Tharoor said that the Sri Lankan government should treat his former President with the honor and dignity, which he is entitled to after serving decades towards the country.

What did Sri Lankan journalist tell?
Talking to news agency ANI, senior Sri Lankan journalist S Venkat Narayan said, “I think it is very ridiculous because he (Wickramasinghe) said before the arrest that I have never done anything for myself. I only worked for Sri Lanka and you know that I know how to arrest me (President Anua Kumara Disanayake) is leading the administration at this time.”
What is the whole matter?
According to a report by Newswire Lanka, Ranil Wickramasinghe was arrested on Friday on charges of misuse of government money. His arrest is associated with allegations of using government money to meet the expenses of a private trip to London, where he attended a university graduate ceremony. Investigators claim that the journey which was part of a broad foreign tour was not an official program, but was funded by government money.
