Veteran weightlifters Ajay Babu Valluri and young weightlifter Bedbrata Bharahali won gold medals on Thursday, performing a record at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships.
National Games champion Ajay lifted a total weight of 335 kg in the senior men’s 79 kg category, including a 152 kg championship record in snatch and 183 kg in clean and jerk.
In his first attempt of 148 kg, Ajay took the same weight in the second attempt after the foul and then increased it to 152 kg. In this way, he overtook the 147 kg snatch record created by Adidyong Joseph Umoafia of Nigeria.
He made continuous progress from 176 kg to 180 kg in clean and jerk. Then broke the record from 183 kg and took a total weight of 335 kg. Ajay also won the gold medal in the 81 kg weight category in the last year’s phase.
India also won a medal in the women’s category. 2022 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Harjinder Kaur won a bronze medal in the 69 kg weight category. He loaded a total of 222 kg by lifting 95 kg in snatch and 123 kg in clean and jerk.
In the 79 kg weight category of the junior men’s category, Bedbrata won the gold medal by lifting 326 kg weight in snatch, clean and jerk and total weight category.
He continuously improved the snatch, weighing 138 kg to 142 kg and eventually 145 kg, which broke the previous record of 139 kg. In clean and jerk, he lifted 173 kg, 177 kg and then 181 kg and broke the previous record of 169 kg.
Bedbrata also improved a record of 307 kg of the championship from 326 kg. India also received a silver medal from Grishma Thorat in the 77 kg event of young women. He lifted a total of 178 kg in snatch by lifting 79 kg and 99 kg in clean and jerk.
