India conducted the first nuclear test in Pokhran in 1974. After this, Pakistan also decided that it will make atomic bombs under any circumstances. For this purpose, Dr. Abdul Qadir Khan started the work of raising nuclear technology and sensitive equipment from Europe. Gradually, the process of uranium enhancement at Pakistan’s Kahuta nuclear plant intensified.
What was worrying about Israel?
Israel has been cautious about nuclear spread for a long time, especially about the activities of Muslim countries. Israel feared that if Pakistan made nuclear weapons, it could prove to be a threat to not only India but the entire middle East. According to the reports, Israel’s agency Mossad had received information about Pakistan’s activities and warned the US, but at that time America needed Pakistan against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, so it ignored this warning.
India had an offer for attack on Kahuta
Adrian Levy and Catherine Scott-Clarke’s book ‘Discussion: Pakistan, United States and the Global Weapons Conspiracy’ mentions that in the 1980s, Israel offered a joint air attack to India to end Pakistan’s Kahuta nuclear plant. This was the plant where the entire nuclear program of Pakistan was being prepared. Israel wanted this mission to be completed through India’s land. But it is said that India had directly refused to join it, as a result of which this Israeli plan was reduced to paper only.
Pakistan gets time
Now call it a hesitation of Israel and America, but it gave Pakistan the time that it needed the most. Pakistan rapidly pursued its nuclear program in the 1980s and 90s and finally surprised the world by doing nuclear tests in Chagai in response to India’s second nuclear test Pokhran-II in 1998.
