Punjab is in the grip of severe floods these days. 1,996 villages in 23 districts of the state have completely submerged in water. So far 46 people have died in this natural disaster and the standing crops in 1.75 lakh hectares of agricultural land have been destroyed. Due to heavy rains, Ravi, Sutlej and Vyas rivers were boom, which made the situation further challenging.
According to sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the flood -affected district Gurdaspur on 9 September. They will meet the affected people and farmers directly and will take stock of the situation. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Army, Border Security Force, Punjab Police and District officials are engaged in relief and rescue work. So far, 22,854 people have been taken to a safe place. 200 relief camps have been set up across the state, where more than 7,000 displaced people have taken shelter.
Water level of Ghaggar river on danger mark
The water level of Pong Dam has reached 1,394.19 feet, which is four feet above the upper limit. The water level of Bhakra Dam was recorded at 1,678.14 feet. The water level of Ghaggar river has also reached above 750 feet.
What did Punjab Finance Minister Harpreet Singh Cheema say?
State Finance Minister Harpreet Singh Cheema described it as the most serious flood of five decades. He said that about 2,000 villages have been affected in Punjab and neighboring hill states due to heavy rains. A total of 3.87 lakh people have been affected. A 50 -year -old man died in a strong current in F IROZPUR district.
Loss of crops in 18 districts of Punjab
The flood has caused extensive agricultural loss in 18 districts. Apart from this, houses, animals and infrastructure have also suffered heavy losses. Officials are telling that relief work is going on at a war footing, 24 NDRF teams and two SDRF teams are engaged in rescue operations with 144 boats.
Along with relief and rescue operations in the state, the water level is constantly being monitored. Officials said that measures are being taken to control water flow in Pong and Bhakra Dam. This flood of Punjab is considered one of the most serious and widespread disasters ever, and relief work is going on.
