Now a new ray of hope has come out to get the eyes back to the eyes. In a recent research, scientists have discovered such a formula, with the help of which bad or completely bad cornea can also be transplanted successfully. Till now it was possible for blind patients to use only healthy cornea, but this new discovery called Calec (Cultivated Autologous Limbal Epithelial Cells) Transplantation has changed this perception.
What is the cornea and why there is loss
The cornea is the most transparent layer of the eye, which helps in transporting the light inside the eye. If this is damaged due to some reason, the ability to see becomes blurred and in serious cases the patients fall prey to blindness. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report, millions of people worldwide are struggling with corneal blindness and in most cases the lack of donor cornea is the biggest challenge.
Shocking revelation of Calec Research
Scientists of Mass Eye and Ear, Mass General Brigham and Harvard Medical School together have developed a new stem-cell technology. In this, limbal stem-cells are taken from the healthy eye of the patient and they are cultured in the lab and transplanted to the damaged cornea. This process removes the cornea dead cells and revives its structure.
Successful use on patients
According to research published in the Journal of Nature Communications, 50 percent of the patients’ eyes were fully cured in the first 3 months. This success reached 79 percent on 12 months and 77 percent on 18 months. In total, more than 90 percent of the patients saw a little or full improvement.
Donor shortage will be overcome
There is a huge shortage of donor cornea in many countries including India. According to the data, about 1.2 lakh cornea transplant is required every year in India, but only 25,000 are completed. With this new technology, bad cornea can also be used and thousands of people will be able to return to the world of lights.
What do doctors say
AIIMS Delhi ophthalmologist Dr. Ashish Gupta says that Calec technology can bring revolution in ophthalmology. Till now the bad cornea was considered useless, but this research is making it useful again. It can be used extensively in the coming time.
challenges ahead
However, this research is currently in the initial stage and will require clinical trials before applying it on a large scale. Doctors believe that if everything is successful, then this technique can be available to common patients in the next 5-7 years.
A ray of hope for blind
This research has raised new hope in the hearts of millions of blind patients, who had to wait for a healthy cornea donor till now. In the coming years, this technique can prove to be one of the biggest achievements in ophthalmology.
