PTSD Treatment Breakthrough: Post-tromatic stress disorder i.e. PTSD is a serious mental problem, which can occur after a scary or life-threatening accident. The effect of this disease is deep on human thinking, behavior and emotions. People repeatedly have bad dreams, feel nervous and have difficulty in living a normal life. Usually medicines and therapy are used to treat it, but they do not affect every patient.
Surprising result found in study
A clinical study done in the US recently raised hope. The PTSD of all the nine patients involved in this research was completely over after a new treatment. Scientists at Texas University at Dallas and Bayler University Medical Center did this study. The special thing is that even after six months of monitoring, the symptoms did not return to any patient.
What is VNS technology?
In this new treatment, a technique called Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) was used with traditional therapy. In this technique, light electrical signals are sent to the neck vein. This vein controls many functions of the brain such as mood, stress and emotions. Scientists believe that VNS together with therapy brings rapid positive changes in the brain.
How the therapy given?
Researchers added VNS with prolonged Exposure Therapy. In this therapy, the patient is gradually encountered his fear in a safe environment. For this, a small device was installed under the skin of the neck, which gives small electrical signals during the session. Treatment was done in a total of 12 sessions and the results were shocking.
Research work going on for 13 years
Scientists have been working on VNS for the last 13 years. Prior to this, they have succeeded in improving the movement of stroke patients. He says that by connecting VNS with therapy, the brain learns new things rapidly. This is called neuroplasticity.
How big is the risk of PTSD?
Every year about 5 percent of adults in America are affected by PTSD. The number of women in these is double that of men. Many patients are unable to cure medicines or therapy or they have to bear side effects. This new way can be a ray of hope for such patients.
Safe and small device
The VNS device used in this trial is very small, almost coin -sized. It does not interrupt the test like MRI or CT scan. It has been safely used on about 50 people in Dallas for the last several years.
Now big trials will prove the strength of technology
Now its Phase-2 is going on in Trial Dallas and Austin. It will include more patients and will also have a “placebo group”, so that it can be clear that the results have come only due to the device. Overall, this study is definitely small but is going to raise high hope. If similar results are found in further big trials, then this technique can become a life -changing treatment for PTSD patients.
