Delayed motherhood delhi: You must have heard the news that women are deciding to become a mother late. Many important facts have been revealed in Delhi’s 2024 birth and death report. This report has made it clear that the average age of becoming a mother in the capital is gradually increasing. Earlier, where most of the women used to become mothers at the age of 20 to 29 years, now the trend of becoming a mother is increasing even at the age of 30 and especially more than 35 years.

Delay in becoming a mother

The report states that in 2024, the number of women who became mother above 35 years reached 8.78 percent. This percentage has been increasing continuously since 2011. Despite this, the age of 25 to 29 years is still considered to be the most common to become a mother. About 37 percent of women became mothers in this age group. At the same time, the number of women who became mother at the age of 20 to 24 years were about 27 percent. This change clearly shows that the thinking of society and family is changing compared to before.

Actually, many social and economic reasons are connected behind becoming a late mother. Now girls are studying more than before. She is focusing on making a career and the age of marriage has also increased compared to before. Apart from this, most people decide to start a family only after achieving economic stability. This is the reason that the trend of becoming a mother at an old age seems to be increasing.

What are the challenges?

However, experts are not completely comfortable about this trend. Dr Ruchika Sharma, a gynecologist in Delhi, says, “There are many types of dangers during pregnancy at the age of 35 years. This age may cause problems in delivery. The risk of genetic disease increases in the child and there is more pressure on the health of the mother. Especially the risk of problems like sugar and blood pressure increases. However, these hazards can be reduced to a large extent.

Sex ratio falling

Another serious aspect has been revealed in the report. Birth rate is continuously decreasing and sex ratio is also falling. At birth in 2022, the sex ratio was 929 girls per 1000 boys, which fell to 922 in 2023 and went down to 920 in 2024. Experts believe that this decline is not just a coincidence, but somewhere behind it can be responsible for instincts like illegal fetal sex check. This situation is very worrying in urban areas like Delhi-NCR.

The report also showed that the level of mother’s education has a profound impact on the size of the family. Among the fourth or more children who produced children were the most women whose studies were less than matriculation. In contrast, this figure was found to be very low in graduate and above women. This simply means that education enables women to make better family planning and health related decisions.

Overall, this report of Delhi brings out a double picture. On the one hand, while the age of becoming a mother is increasing and women are adopting late motherhood, both the number of births and sex ratio are decreasing. Experts believe that to make this changing trend safe, it is very important to provide right information, awareness and timely medical facility to women.
