Ott streaming growth: India’s media and entertainment are changing over time. OTT platforms are becoming the first choice of people and the number of traditional television viewers is decreasing. Digital streaming is continuously spreading its foot. According to OTT Audience Report 2025 of Ormax Media, the number of people using OTT in the country has been more than 60 crores. Of these, 14.82 crore is active paid subscription. Let us tell you that these subscriptions also include telecom provides and subscriptions given through OTT aggregators.
However, the report also mentions that the growth rate of people using OTT is about 10%. This is slightly slower than previous years. Apart from this, people who used connected TV in the last 1 year saw an increase of 87% and now 12.92 crore people are watching OTT content on their TV.
Traditional TV audience number declines
There is also a significant decline in the popularity of liner or traditional TV. Let us tell you that now only 25% of people are dependent on traditional TV for entertainment. Along with this, 23% of people see content only through digital platforms and this change is being seen in all age, field and socio -economic classes.
What is due to the decline in traditional TV’s popularity
Actually, now people can see the content at any time and anywhere. Along with this, different types of content are found on the OTT platform. These include international, regional and special categories. Not only this, many platforms also provide premium subscriptions, with the help of which all the obstacles of advertising etc. are eliminated.
Paid TV subscription base declines
In the last 6 years, there has been a lot of decline in paid TV in India. According to AIDCF and EY India, the number of these subscribers in 2018 was 151 million. In 2024, this number remains 111 million. That is, 40 million houses have stopped watching paid TV in the last 6 years.
