The incident of sabotage occurred on Monday (29 September 2025) with the statue of Mahatma Gandhi installed on London’s ‘Tavistock Square’. The incident occurred a few days before the annual Gandhi Jayanti celebrations to be held on October 2. Some provocative frescoes were found on the platform of this prestigious statue. After the matter came to light, the Indian High Commission strongly condemned the incident.
In this statue, the Father of the Nation is shown in meditation posture. The Indian mission said that local authorities have been informed of the incident, while the officials of the High Commission had reached the spot to fix the memorial. The London -based Indian High Commission said in a statement on social media, “The incident of demolition of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue installed on the London Indian High Commission ‘Tavistock Square’ is very sad and India strongly condemns it.”
A violent attack on Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy
Mission said, “This is not just the incident of sabotage but a violent attack on the idea of non -violence and Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy three days before the International Non -Violence Day. We have raised the issue seriously with local authorities for immediate action and our team is already present at the scene and is being coordinated with the authorities to fix the statue.” The United Nations has nominated Gandhi Jayanti as International Non -Violence Day and a wreath is offered at London’s memorial every year on October 2 and Gandhiji’s favorite hymns are sung.
Bronze statue unveiled
This bronze statue, built in collaboration with India League, was unveiled in 1968. This statue was installed remembering those days of Mahatma Gandhi, when he was a law student at University College London. The inscription on the platform reads, ‘Mahatma Gandhi, 1869-1948’. Metropolitan police and local Camden Council officials said that they are investigating the case.
