PM modi-yunus meeting: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh’s interim government Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus met during the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok on Friday (4 April 2025). India raised the issue of safety of minorities in Bangladesh in front of Mohammad Yunus. This was the first meeting of PM Modi with the top leadership of Bangladesh after the coup in Bangladesh in August last year.
India asked to avoid the statement that spoils the atmosphere
India has asked Bangladesh to avoid rhetoric that spoil the atmosphere. Recently, Mohammad Yunus made a controversial statement about the northeastern states. Foreign Secretary Vikram Egypting took a meeting of the two leaders and said that Prime Minister Modi hoped that the Bangladesh government will ensure their safety including intensive investigation into all the cases of atrocities against minorities. The Foreign Secretary said that during the meeting, the Prime Minister also called upon that any rhetoric that spoil the atmosphere should be avoided.
Yunus’s controversial statement about the northeastern states
Since the formation of Mohammad Yunus in the neighboring country, there has been an increase in the relations between India and Bangladesh. Mohammad Yunus has given a disputed statement on several occasions, on which India lodged an objection. Mohammad Yunus, the leader of the interim government of Bangladesh, met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on 28 March. During this, he gave a disputed statement about the northeastern states of India.
Mohammad Yunus said, “The eastern part of India is called Seven Sisters. They are land surrounded by land. They have no way to reach the sea.” Describing Bangladesh as the only patron of the ocean in the region, Yunus said that this could be a big opportunity and the Chinese economy can be expanded.
Strict adherence to border law
According to the Foreign Secretary, during the meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the issue of curbing the incidents of illegally crossing the border, especially at night to maintain strict implementation of law on the border, maintains strict implementation, border security and stability.
