Last Saturday BCCI declared the Indian Squad for Australia for the Australian Tour. The most shocking decision in this was that Rohit Sharma has been removed and handed over to the ODI team’s captaincy Shubman Gill. Rohit Sharma was India’s most successful captain in winning percentage terms, within last year, Team India has been given 2 ICC Trophy. Due to these reasons, the decision to remove Rohit from captaincy was really shocking.
In the IPL, it was very difficult for Mumbai Indians to repeat the same record in international cricket for Rohit Sharma, who won 5 trophy under his captaincy. But Rohit’s figures prove how much success Team India has got to his under. Rohit captained the team in 56 ODIs, in which the team won 42 matches. The victory percentage under Rohit’s captaincy was 75. Rohit’s win percentage was the best among the players who captain the Indian ODI team in more than 10 matches. In such a situation, the question arises whether it was right to remove Rohit Sharma from the captaincy?
It is right to remove Rohit Sharma from captaincy?
Rohit Sharma is still 38 years old, by the time 2027 ODI World Cup comes, Rohit will have been 40 years old. Many fans will want Rohit to play more cricket now, but the problem is that till 2027 World Cup, Rohit will not be able to play more cricket in the year apart from IPL. There are not enough matches, game awareness and fitness to maintain.
It has been decided that Indian cricket has entered the era of Shubman Gill. Gill has proved his leadership skills by drawing Test series 2-2 with England. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar has also made his mindset clear about the future of Team India that it is not good for the team to be different captains in 3 different formats. This can also be called the right time to hand over the captaincy to Shubman Gill because he can take over the team for at least the next decade. Perhaps they are being prepared for this.
