Artificial Intelligence: Today we are in an era where technology has become a part of our lives. Be it health, banking or education, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has revolutionized every field. It is no longer just a thing of science fiction, but has now become a part of our classrooms, teaching material and evaluation system. India’s higher education system has also not lagged behind in this change.
Universities and colleges of the country are now rapidly adopting AI tools. Due to this, not only the quality education is improving, but the experience of the students is also becoming more personal and intelligent. A recent report by Ernst & Young-Parthenon and FICCI shows that many big higher education institutions of India have moved ahead in adopting AI. In such a situation, let us know what has been told in this new report and how India’s higher education system is changing?
Growing impact of AI
The name of this report is Future Ready Campuses Unlocking the Power of AI in Higher Education. In this, 30 big universities and colleges of the country were studied, so that it could be found out how much and in what way the Higher Education Institutions of India are using AI. The report revealed that more than 50 percent of higher education institutions are using AI-based tools to prepare teaching material. Also, 60 percent of the institutes are allowing students to use AI tools in their projects and assignments. Apart from this, 56 percent of the institutions have already implemented policies related to AI. 40 percent of colleges and universities are using AI based chatbots and tutoring systems. 39 percent have adopted adaptive learning platforms and 38 percent of the institutions are using automated grading of exam copies.
How is the higher education system changing?
According to the report, AI is being used not just in one or two places but in many parts of education. Such as personal and smart learning systems, plagiarism detection, career guidance and curriculum designing, AI based chatbots that can immediately respond to students’ queries and can create study material themselves. However, as the use of AI is increasing, concerns about data privacy are also increasing. AI systems typically store student information such as submission data, biometric information and online activities. This increases the risk of data leakage and breach of privacy.
In this report it has been recommended that AI Literacy be added to all curriculums. Along with this, STEM students have also been advised to teach advanced topics like machine learning, natural language processing, and robotics. It is clearly stated in the report that if India has to take full advantage of AI, then AI will have to be included in every part of education and administration, strong digital infrastructure will have to be created, teachers will have to be trained in AI tools and governance framework will have to be created.
