Israel and Hamas on Thursday (9 October 2025) signed an agreement to release Israeli hostages in exchange for a ceasefire and Palestinian prisoners. This agreement is part of the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s initiative to end the war in Gaza.
Both sides signed ceasefire agreement in Egypt
The signing of this agreement was confirmed after talks between officials of both sides in Egypt. After the announcement of this agreement, people of Palestine and Israel celebrated. It is the biggest step yet taken towards ending the two-year war, which has killed more than 67,000 Palestinians.
‘Ceasefire will become effective after government approval’
Ceasefire will be implemented under this agreement. Israel will partially withdraw from Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the ceasefire will come into effect after the approval of his government. According to Reuters report, the Israeli government confirmed the signing of the agreement and said that the ceasefire will come into effect within 24 hours of the cabinet meeting. People held hostage in Gaza will be released within 72 hours.
‘The list of people to be released has not been released’
According to the report, an Israeli official said, “On October 7, 2023, all 20 Israeli hostages captured by Hamas during the attack will be released. All these hostages are alive in Gaza.” He told that Marwan Barghouti will not be included among the Palestinian prisoners that Israel will release.
A Palestinian official said that even after the signing of the agreement, the list of people to be released has not yet been finalized. The group is demanding the release of some of the most prominent Palestinian perpetrators held in Israeli prisons, as well as hundreds of people detained during attacks on Israel.
