Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday (October 9, 2025) made a big statement regarding a plane crash in Azerbaijan in 2024 last year. Putin has admitted for the first time that Russia had a role in the Azerbaijani passenger plane crash that occurred in 2024. 38 out of 67 people on board the plane died in this plane crash, which Russian President Vladimir Putin termed an accident.
In fact, last year on December 25, 2024, an Azerbaijan Airlines flight crash landed in Kazakhstan. A total of 67 people including crew members were on board this plane. In which 38 people died after the accident. This horrific accident happened when the flight was diverted from its scheduled landing place Grozny after hitting a bird.
Putin acknowledged Russia’s role in his meeting with Azerbaijan’s President
Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged Russia’s role in this terrible accident during his meeting with Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev. Putin told President Aliyev that on the morning of the accident, Russia had fired two missiles to destroy Ukrainian drone attacks, which had exploded just a few meters away from the Azerbaijan Airlines plane.
He said, ‘Russian missiles did not hit the plane directly. If this had happened, the plane would have crashed immediately. Putin said that Russian air traffic controllers (ATC) had advised the pilot of the flight to land in Makhachkala, but the pilot tried to land at his home airport and still headed towards Kazakhstan, where the plane had a terrible accident.
Putin gave assurance to President Aliyev
Russian President Vladimir Putin assured President Aliyev that Russia will take all necessary steps to provide compensation in this tragic case and that the actions of all officials will be legally investigated.
At the same time, the Kremlin issued a statement saying, ‘Aliyev had earlier accused Russia of hiding the real truth of this accident, but on Thursday (October 9, 2025) he thanked President Vladimir Putin for giving detailed information about this accident.’
