Nowadays gold prices are skyrocketing. Be it a wedding, a festival or an investment opportunity, people want their money to be kept in a safe place and there are few better options than gold. But along with increasing demand, incidents of fraud and fake gold are also increasing. Many people consider gold to be real just by looking at its weight or shine, whereas now even fake jewelery looks like real gold. In such a situation, it has become very important to identify real and fake gold. Now you can check the quality of gold sitting at home with some easy methods, and can know whether the gold you have purchased is real or not. So let us know how to check whether the gold bought from the market is real or fake while sitting at home.

How to know at home whether gold is real or fake?
Now you do not need to go to the jeweler every time to get your gold checked. You can also check it yourself with some easy home methods.

1. Identify by looking at the hallmark – The easiest and most reliable way is to watch Hallmark. Hallmark is a government certificate which tells what percentage of gold is pure. BIS certifies hallmarks in India. If the jewelery does not have a hallmark, it may be fake or adulterated.

2. Test with a magnet –This is an easy home trick. Gold is a non-magnetic metal. If you take a magnet near the jewelery and it starts getting pulled, then understand that it is adulterated. If the magnet has no effect, then the jewel may be genuine.

3. Check by immersing it in water – To check real or fake gold at home, fill a vessel with clean water and put the jewel in it. Real gold is heavy, so it sinks in water. If the jewelery starts floating, it may be fake or adulterated.

4. Check with vinegar – To check real or fake gold, put 2-3 drops of vinegar on the jewellery. If its color starts changing, then it is adulterated. If there is no change, the jewel may be genuine.

5. Check by rubbing on ceramic plate – To test real or fake gold at home, take an unpolished white ceramic plate. Rub the jewelry gently. If a golden line emerges from the jewellery, then it is genuine and if a black line emerges, then it is fake.

6. Understand the quality of gold from carat – The quality of gold is measured in carats. For example, 24 carat gold is 99.9 percent pure, but very soft. It is mostly used in coins and bars. Whereas 22 carat gold which is 91.6 percent pure is ideal for jewellery. In 18 carat and 14 carat gold, more other metals are mixed with gold, which makes it cheaper and slightly less pure. Carat is written on the jewellery, so definitely check it while buying.
