Kishore Kumar was not only a singer but also a versatile artiste, who is fondly called ‘Kishore Da’. His velvety voice and its unique style of pause made him synonymous with Indian music.
Born on August 4, 1929 in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, Kishore Kumar’s real name was Abhas Kumar Ganguly. His elder brother Ashok Kumar was already a famous Bollywood actor, due to which Kishore Kumar also got inclined towards cinema, but where Ashok shone in acting, Kishore Kumar made the world crazy with his songs.
Kishore Kumar was initially encouraged to pursue acting, but his soul was in music. Kishore Kumar started acting in 1946 with the film Shikari, but he did not feel like acting. He wanted to become a singer like KL Sehgal. In the film Ziddi in 1948, under the music direction of Khemchandra Prakash, he sang his first song, ‘Marne ki duaain kyun mangu, jeene ki tamanna kaun kare’, which was for Dev Anand. After this he achieved great success in singing and never looked back.
Kishore Kumar was a voice who gave countless evergreen songs to Hindi cinema, like Mere Sapno Ki Rani, Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas, and Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana. There was magic in his singing, be it romantic songs, sad or upbeat songs, he presented every emotion very well. The liveliness and emotional depth of his voice made him a favorite of every generation. His voice brought alive every emotion.
Kishore Kumar gave many classic songs in collaboration with musicians like RD Burman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Kishore Da had a special relationship with musician RD Burman. Both of them gave countless hit songs like ‘Kati Patang’, ‘Amar Prem’. Kishore Kumar was not only a singer, but also an actor, director, producer and musician. His films ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’ and ‘Jhumru’ are still popular among the audience.
His comedy avatar and natural acting made him a favorite of the audience, but Kishore Da’s personal life was as difficult as his art was effortless. Four marriages, which included Ruma Ghosh, Madhubala, Yogita Bali and Leena Chandavarkar, brought many ups and downs in his life. Kishore Kumar died of a heart attack on October 13, 1987, but his voice is still alive.
