Usually people wake up in the morning and take shower every day. The purpose of taking a shower in the morning is to feel clean and fresh. Do you know that the shower with which you take bath can become a threat to the lungs? Research has revealed that millions of bacteria and fungi live inside the shower head and its pipes, which can enter your body through your face and breath every time you turn on the shower. In such a situation, let us tell you today how the lungs are becoming victims of infection by taking shower daily and which bacteria are posing a threat to it.

Shower head is home to microbes

When you take a shower, the shower pipe and shower head remain hot and wet for several hours. This time is the most favorable environment for bacteria to grow. The sticky layer that forms inside wet pipes after taking a shower is actually home to microorganisms. When you turn on the shower in the morning, this biofilm instantly dissolves in the water and spreads in the air. Regarding this, tests conducted in labs and homes have found that lakhs to crores of bacteria can be present per square centimeter on the shower hose surface. Most of these are not harmful, but some dangerous types like mycobacteria and Legionella pneumophila have been found, which can cause dangerous infections in the lungs like Legionnaire’s disease.

Who are at greater risk?

According to experts, the risk of bacteria found in the shower is very low for most people, but for people with weak immunity, the elderly or the sick, this infection can prove dangerous. This is why hospitals and health care centers have strict rules for regularly changing and disinfecting shower heads. In this study conducted in America, it was also revealed that in the areas where the amount of mycobacteria in the shower head was high, there were more cases of NTM infection of the lungs. These included hot and humid areas like Hawaii, Florida, Southern California and New York.

Be sure to take these precautions before bathing

  • If you also take shower daily, then you do not need to worry about it. Because experts suggest some easy methods regarding this which can reduce these dangers to a great extent.
  • For this, after turning on the shower, let the water flow continuously for 1 to 2 minutes, so that the bacteria accumulated overnight is washed away.
  • If you go to take a shower, first turn on the geyser and let the hot water flow. Bacteria like Legionella are also destroyed when hot water flows from the shower.
  • Experts say that you should clean the shower head and pipes regularly, wash the shower head with hot water or even soak it in lemon juice.
  • It is also important to keep the ventilation of the bathroom on, in such a situation, running the exhaust fan after bathing reduces the microbes present in the air.
