We have often heard that diseases like diabetes, high cholesterol, thyroid, or cataract happen only to humans. Now the surprising truth is that these serious diseases are now happening to the animals living in zoos. Even the powerful and dangerous animals like lion, tiger and leopard living in Gorakhpur Zoological Park have now fallen prey to diseases which were earlier found only in humans. Let us know why animals are suffering from diseases like humans?
animals falling ill in zoo
Recently several incidents came to light in Gorakhpur Zoo, in which 90 percent cataract was found in both the eyes of the tigress. There is very little chance of his regaining his sight. Earlier, a leopard had cancer, due to which it died. Now another leopard is suffering from diseases like diabetes, thyroid and high cholesterol. Very high amount of triglyceride was found in his body, which caused swelling. All these diseases were revealed after blood test. Apart from this, Babbar Sher had died some time ago due to an epileptic attack. This was a very unusual incident, because diseases like epilepsy are not usually found in lions.
Why are animals getting diseases like humans?
There is a lot of difference between the environment of a zoo and the freedom of the jungle. Experts believe that living in captivity completely changes the lifestyle and diet of animals. The life of animals living in zoo is completely different from that in the forest. In the forest, animals run and roam for miles, but in the zoo they have very little space to roam. This reduces their physical activity. In the forest, animals hunt for themselves, which keeps them active. But in the zoo, they are given food in fixed quantity at fixed time. This may impair their metabolism.
Animals can come under mental stress due to closed cages and the same lifestyle every day. This also has a bad effect on their health. The activity of most of the animals in zoos is limited, due to which obesity, hormonal changes and metabolic diseases start developing in them and due to all these reasons animals are suffering from human-like diseases.
treatment of animals in zoo
Dr. Yogesh Pratap Singh, Chief Wildlife Veterinarian of Gorakhpur Zoological Park, says that animals are regularly examined in the zoo. These diseases cannot be detected in the forests because no testing is possible there. But blood tests, eye tests and other tests are done from time to time in the zoo. For this reason, diseases like diabetes and thyroid could be detected in leopard on time and tigress is also being treated.
