In India, many issues related to women’s health are now being discussed openly in society and medicine. But autoimmune diseases are such an important health problem, which still remains out of discussion. Recently, experts threw light on this serious topic at the 40th annual conference of the Indian Rheumatology Association, IRACON 2025, held in Dwarka, Gujarat. This surprising fact came to light in this conference that out of every 10 patients suffering from autoimmune diseases, about 7 are women, that is, 70 percent of autoimmune patients are women. This statistic is not only troubling, but also shows how women’s lifestyle, hormones, and social circumstances make them more sensitive to these diseases. So let us know what autoimmune diseases are and why this disease occurs more in women.

What are autoimmune diseases?

Autoimmune diseases mean diseases in which the body’s own immune system mistakenly attacks its own healthy tissues and organs. Normally this system protects the body from infections and diseases, but in autoimmune disorders this protection system becomes a threat to the body. In these diseases, the joints, skin, muscles, blood vessels and internal organs of the body can get damaged. Some common autoimmune diseases include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, hypothyroidism and psoriasis.

Why are autoimmune diseases more common in women?

According to experts, autoimmune diseases are found more in women than in men. There can be many reasons behind this. As –

1. Hormonal Changes: Hormones in women’s bodies can affect their immune system. Hormonal changes occur during phases like periods, pregnancy and menopause, which can impair the body’s immune response.

2. Genetic Causes: Some diseases run in families. If a woman’s mother or sister has an autoimmune disease, then the chances of that woman also getting it increases.

3. Sensitivity of the immune system: The immune system of women is more active than that of men. This is the reason why they are able to fight infections better, but sometimes this activity attacks the body’s own organs.

Why is the situation worse in India?

According to experts, 70 percent of autoimmune patients are women. But it is a matter of concern that most women come to the doctor when the disease has progressed significantly. Many women keep ignoring symptoms like fatigue, joint pain, skin problems or persistent fever. They consider them as normal weakness or the effect of age. At the same time, environmental and lifestyle problems in India worsen this situation. Increasing pollution and infection in cities also affects the immune system. Apart from this, the condition starts worsening due to poor diet, stress, and lack of sleep.
