World Anesthesia Day is celebrated every year on 16 October. On this day, thanks are given to those doctors who do not allow the patient to suffer pain during the operation. Doctors usually give anesthesia for painless operations, so that patients do not face any pain during surgery. Anesthesia Day is also celebrated because it reminds us how anesthesia completely changed the experience of surgery. In such a situation, today on World Anesthesia Day, let us tell you about which disease was the first operation done under anesthesia.
First operation under anesthesia
On October 16, 1846, a dentist gave ather to a patient at Massachusetts General Hospital in America. After this, the surgeon removed the tumor from the patient’s neck without causing any pain. This was the first recorded anesthesia operation. This operation proved to be a milestone in the world of anesthesia. Before this anesthesia operation, in the Victorian era, operations were very painful and dangerous. At that time the patients were kept on wooden benches and then the surgeons would perform the operation. At the same time, due to pain, earlier the operation was done very quickly. However, due to this increase, the infection and death rates were also very high. Sometimes during the operation the patient and the person holding the patient were also killed. Till then, surgery was done only as a last resort, because if there was a bone fracture or serious injury, there were very few options for repair. In such a situation, the invention of anesthesia at that time proved to be revolutionary for both the patient and the doctor.
How was anesthesia discovered?
Before 1846, many techniques were tried to reduce pain during operations. In 1845, dentist Horace Wells used nitrous oxide, but its test also failed. A few months later, William Morton successfully experimented with aether. Later chloroform was also invented, which was used extensively. But there were many dangers in the use of anesthesia in the initial stages. After this, scientists and doctors developed the right dose and technique to make anesthesia safe. However, even after the advent of anesthesia, about 5% of people are still unable to reach anesthesia safely.
