Team India’s two star openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill are once again in the headlines. BCCI has recently handed over the captaincy of the ODI team from Rohit to Yuva Gill. The video of their meeting at New Delhi airport is going viral on social media, in which Gill and Rohit were seen hugging each other. There is an old and controversial story hidden behind this friendly moment, when a mistake by Gill had put Rohit Sharma’s career in trouble.
Mohali incident which shocked everyone
This is the year 2024, when the T20 series was being played between India and Afghanistan in Mohali. This was the same series in which Rohit Sharma returned to T20 cricket after 14 months. There was tremendous excitement among the fans regarding his return to the team, but that day an incident happened which shocked everyone. Due to which Rohit became furious on the field itself.
Actually, there was a misunderstanding between Rohit and Gill regarding taking runs on the very second ball of the innings. Rohit called “Yes” and ran fast, but Gill was completely focused on the ball and did not move from the crease. As a result, Rohit was run out. The hitman returned to the pavilion without scoring and there was silence in the entire stadium.
Rohit’s anger erupted on the field
Rohit Sharma got very angry after being run out. He expressed his displeasure by looking at Gill on the field itself. There was a strong discussion among everyone whether Rohit would be able to play, because this was his sixth runout and this runout had put his career in trouble.
After the match, when Rohit was asked a question on this incident, he showed composure and said, “Such things keep happening in sports. Everything does not go according to you. The team won the match, that is what is important.”
Now the same Gill becomes the captain
Times changed, circumstances changed. Today the same Shubman Gill is the Test and ODI captain of Team India. Rohit Sharma is playing under his captaincy today. This change is normal in cricket, but it is also true that now Gill is considered the future of Team India.
Rohit will be 40 years old by the 2027 ODI World Cup. In such a situation, the team now needs new thinking and new energy, which Gill is bringing.
