CBI has arrested Punjab Police’s Ropar Range DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar and a private person in a bribery case of Rs 8 lakh. The arrested officer is a 2009 batch IPS officer and was currently posted as DIG of Ropar Range. CBI recovered many luxury items during raids at DIG’s house and premises.

According to CBI, the DIG is accused of demanding a bribe of Rs 8 lakh from a businessman in exchange for settling the FIR registered against him and not taking any further police action. Apart from this, he was also demanding to take money illegally every month.

CBI played a game to catch DIG red handed

After receiving the complaint, CBI registered a case on October 16 and laid a trap in Sector-21, Chandigarh and caught the accused’s middleman red handed while taking Rs 8 lakh. CBI said that during the trap, the complainant made a controlled call to the DIG, in which the officer admitted receiving the money and called the middleman and the complainant to his office. After this the CBI team arrested the DIG from his office.

During the raid, CBI recovered huge amount of cash and valuables from the houses and hideouts of the DIG, which included about Rs 5 crore in cash (counting is still going on), 1.5 kg of gold and jewellery, several documents related to property in Punjab, keys of Mercedes and Audi cars and 22 expensive watches.

Foreign liquor bottles and guns also recovered

Apart from this, locker keys, 40 liter foreign liquor bottles, a double barrel gun, a pistol, a revolver, an air gun have been recovered from the house and premises. CBI has also recovered Rs 21 lakh cash from the middleman. Both the accused have been arrested and will be presented in the court on October 17. CBI has said that further search and investigation is going on in the case.
