Liver Transplant Surgery: Every year there is a large population in the country who suffers from liver problems, which include problems like liver cirrhosis, hepatitis, liver failure and cancer. When these patients do not get relief from medicines or other methods, doctors recommend liver transplant. In such a situation, there is always a question among the common people whether in liver transplant, the entire liver is given to the patient or half the liver. Let us tell you about it and also tell you how much money it costs to do a liver transplant.
Is a complete liver transplant possible?
Let us tell you that liver is the only part of our body which can regenerate itself. This is the reason why the entire liver is not transplanted to the patient. There are two processes in this. The first is the living donor. In this, usually only 60 to 70 percent of the donor’s liver is removed and transplanted to the patient. After a few months, the liver of both takes shape. The second process is that of cadaveric donor, that is, the liver of a deceased person can be transplanted completely, but it can also be divided into two parts and transplanted into different patients.
What is the process?
There is a law in India called Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994 (THOTA Act). According to this, living donors can only be close relatives such as parents, siblings, children, spouse. Apart from these, if someone donates a liver, he needs permission. Before taking liver, patients are first examined. The patient’s blood test, imaging, liver function test and full body examination are done. Surgery is done to transplant the liver, in which a part of the liver is removed from the donor and transplanted into the patient.
The surgery may last 8 to 12 hours and requires monitoring in the ICU. After this, the donor can usually return to normal life in 10 to 15 days and the patient needs medicines and regular check-ups for 3 to 6 months. If we talk about how much money is required for this, it varies depending on the place. For example, its normal fee ranges between Rs 12 to 21 lakh and it can also increase. The prices keep increasing and decreasing in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and other cities.
